Secrets in the Ice Season 3
Archaeologists and scientists investigate extraordinary discoveries preserved in ice and permafrost across the globe — from ancient warrior sacrifices in Danish bogs to secret WWII Arctic bases and a 44,000-year-old wolf unearthed in Siberia.
Secrets in the Ice has always asked what the cold chooses to keep. Season 3 answered with some of the most remarkable discoveries in the series' history: a 44,000-year-old preserved wolf pulled from Siberian permafrost, mass graves from a Mongol massacre in Russia, a lost British WWII aircraft tracked across Iceland's glaciers, and a secret military base discovered near the North Pole. Ten episodes aired on Sky History and Discovery Science Channel between January and March 2024.
The VFX challenge on Season 3 was scale and variety. Each episode cut between two or three concurrent investigations on different continents — every location required its own environmental language, its own period context, its own CG reconstruction brief. We built a modular pipeline that let us move quickly between a Stone Age bog site in Denmark and an abandoned WWII fortress in the Italian Alps without losing visual coherence.
Season 3 holds a 7.0 IMDb rating and continued the series' run as one of the most visually ambitious documentary franchises in factual television. The work spans environment reconstruction, artefact visualisation, aerial survey simulation, and seamless location extension — a full-service VFX contribution to a production that demands accuracy as much as spectacle.
